Recordings of the first Original Dulcimer Players Club meeting |
||
On September 28, 1963,something amazing happened in Michigan. Through the efforts
of Elgia Hickok and others, 17 dulcimer players gathered at Community
Hall, Barryton Michigan to play and to form what would become the
Original Dulcimer Players Club. Considering the relative
obscurity of the instrument at the time, this was an amazing
event. Of those 17 players, only two (Bob Spinner and Elgia
Hickok) regularly played in public. The rest played for their
own enjoyment and learned informally from relatives or another
player. The event was recorded by Gene Cox. Gene became president
of the club in 1967 and remained as it's president until 1981. Portions of that recording are presented here as a window in time..... listen to the tunes and the styles and the instruments and get a glimpse of how the dulcimer was played before the "modern" era of festivals and workshops and recordings and teachers. These recordings are available to all for personal use only. They remain the property of the ODPC and are not to be used for commercial purposes. While every effort has been made to preserve the sound quality of these recordings, remember that they were made nearly 50 years ago on home equipment. Consider them an "aural window in time" and a historical document of the beginning of the modern renaissance of the dulcimer. |
