International Dulcimer Exposition, May 1981
In May of 1981 the ODPC (spearheaded by Bill Webster, Bob Hubbach and Paul Gifford)put together an International Dulcimer Exposition. It was an ambitious three day program that attempted to gather together in one place as many different types of dulcimers and players from around the world as possible.
The Expo was held at Columbiere College in Clarkston Michigan, a large campus with rooms for jamming, socializing, visiting and instrument displays. There was also a large auditorium for the concerts. It attracted several hundred attendees as I recall. There were players from many different cultures, with jams and concerts. Paul Gifford set up an instrument display with instruments from his collection. I camped outside in a tent and nearly floated out during the night.
I had been to the Funfest for a couple years by then but as a relatively new player from Chicago (which had maybe three dulcimer players at the time), it was a wonderful smorgasboard of instruments, players, cultures and music that I had never experienced before. In one place I got to hear a Ukranian Tsymbali, a Chinese Yang Chin, a Hungarian Cimbalom, a Russian-German dulcimer, a Persion Santour and of course an American hammered dulcimer. And all that for $6 per day! This event was where I met Glen and Judi Morningstar and Bob Hubbach... friendships that have endured to this day.
I was also pretty new to the art of video recording but I was an
electronics geek so I took along my home video camera and portable
recorder and captured
some of the event. Video recorders (and cameras) of the early 80s were not what
they are today..... the camera needed AC power and was not real happy
indoors and the recorder had a truly awful audio section. But....
the event got captured and the video is a window back to a truly
marvelous event in Michigan dulcimer history. Paul Goelz, 2011 |
